Revolutionary War Spies
In this article you will learn how spies from both sides of the war help their country to win. Here are some names you will hear: Benedict Arnold, Ann Bates, Nathan Hale, and Miss Jenny. The British had more spies than the Americans did and the Americans still won the war.
Benedict Arnold
Patriot then British. He began his career as an American Patriot in May 1775, when he and Ethan Allen led the army that captured Fort Ticonderoga . Arnold's heroics continued in September, when he led an army of 1,150 men against Quebec. Arnold after all he did is a villan in United States for betrying his country. That is what he will be remembered for.
Miss Jenny
British. Miss Jenny moved through the French and American troops, meeting their first guard. The guard took Miss Jenny back to the French camp where he tried to force his loving attentions on the female spy. Miss Jenny managed to escape his clutches and continued to claim that she and her supplying mother were looking for her father who had gone to France from Canada six years ago. Miss Jenny successfully returned to the British camp and reported all she had learned to Baron Ottendorf. She reported that the American troops were ready to advance and that General Washington was reportedly planning on attacking New York City in two places.
Nathan Hale
I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.
Patriot. That was the quote that Mr. Hale used before he was hung. Five of his brothers fought at the battles of Lexington and Concord. Hale is not remembered for his success as a spy. Then made his way back to an appointed meeting place at Oyster Bay. Nathan Hale saw a boat come in he waved for it to come over sadly it was a British boat.then they hung him {famous words at the top}.
Ann Bates
Patriot. Loyalist American who spied for the British during the Revolutionary War. A Philadelphia schoolteacher, she was married to a man assigned to a British Army unit as an repairman. She listened in on conversations, checked out gun emplacements. She also helped other spies get through the lines and stay at safe houses as they made their way back to British territory. She was mostly on both sides during the war.
Now you Know about spies from both sides of the war. It was the patriot vs. loyalist in a fight for freedom. I know what side I would have been on. What side would you have been on? I think a better question would be what side was your family on and would you side with them?
